I use a 5' crowbar, handle end first on my digger. It will still dig off at an angle when it hits a rock (rocks in Maine? What a concept!). I use a 9" auger, but I usually set 6" posts, so if the hole is a bit out of plumb, I'll trim the sizes a bit with the old clamshells, and set the post in the middle of the hole so I can plumb it. It'd be nice to be able to dig perfect holes about an inch bigger than the post, but it usually ain't gonna happen. It also helps to have two people working the digger, which also don't happen much for me.
