Gents: This is one of the most interesting interchanges I have seen on this site in a long time. I follow this site daily. I wear overalls and have for the last 30 years. I am also a professional person (I'm posting under a new name -- don't want to be met with resistance when I need information ). I often wear coat , silk tie , and shirt that it costs $2.50 to launder. Here is my take: 1. There are what I call "real" people in all walks of life. Some overalls wearers are not real--- some people who wear coats and ties are not real. Real means authentic , real means engaged , real means generous in spirit , in grace , in preferring one's brother. 2.Without question , how one dresses has an effect on the warmth and courtesy one is shown in the market place. It is just human nature. Is it right? Far from it! Is it true ? For sure! 3. The issue is to be real despite what one is wearing. Reminds me of the story that many of you have no doubt heard: London, after WW II , GI goes into a doughnut shop early one Sunday and comes out with hot doughnuts. He sees an orphan at the glass window drooling and salivating--he promptly goes back in , buys a bunch more and comes out and hands the papersack to the orphan. He then mounts his Jeep only to feel something tugging at his sleeve. It's the kid who asks "Mister , are you God?" That's real.
