The tie rod end is a socket that the ball (with it's tapered end) drops into that the tapered/threaded end subsequently get torqued down into the the center link. The ball itself (unlike auto tie rod ends that you buy a tie rod end with a ball in it) actually is inserted to the tie rod end from the opposite end and held in place by a "cap" that the Case-IH man says is "threaded" as a retainer to the socket. This retaining cap has a very large slot in the exposed side that aligns with holes drilled 180* out around the outside of the socket for a wire keeper (the wire is probably a "shade tree" thing). Wish could draw a picture. The danged CAP won't come loose!
