I say diesels have the potential for being much tougher than gas units over the long haul. Because diesel fuel is a lubricant, they wear very little, and with no ignition, you eliminate a major weak area. We have a 1970 53-hp David Brown that has been trouble-free all these years. Also, it hardly uses any fuel! I also have a 1986 John Deere 330 garden tractor with a 3-cylinder Yanmar, and it starts in any weather and runs great. Never had a hint of a problem. Unless you live way up north, go with the diesel.
