If we have access to a disc big enough, we like to use that behind the spring plowing before it gets put to corn. Works good on sod, but spring plowing doesn't let it break up like fall plowing does. I don't think you'll have any problems woth the disk. Once over with that and it should be pretty broke up. Might have tufts of dirt and roots yet, most likely anway, but they will be almost completely gone in another year.

We've got a sod field we plowed under last spring, borrowed the neighbor's disc and ran it down twice with that, then once or twice more with our springtooth. Had a bunch of trash building up in the springtooth, but a cultivator with more clearance would have been fine. (didn't have one big enough to go behind the 1855)

It was still a fairly rough ride with the planter, but then we plowed it again last fall and this spring it is far mellower than I have ever seen that field. It has always been chunky as long as i can remember until this year it wokred up really nice with the 1st pass of the spring tooth.

This weekend I picked up a decent but rusty Oliver 245 18' field cultivator for about scrap price, and that should help. I should be able to dig deeper, and in turn make 1 or 2 less passes to get the work done. First thing though, is that I need to replace a few teeth and get the new tach drive put on the 285.
