OT: Radial Tire Rotation

I was always told to rotate radial tires front to back/back to front on same side. Had front end aligned on Mercury Mountaineer today...have had cupping on inside of front right tire...and technician told me to criss-cross rotate them...and that it was a myth that you should only rotate them front to back. What do you guys think? Sorry for the O.T. Tim
