open center is a gear pump that circulates oil continuely at no pressure to make pressure you pull a lever which restricts the flow CLOSED CENTER is a piston type pump which maintans 2000---2500PSI with (no flow) to use at any time some newer style pumps maintan what is called low standby pressure controled by a compensater with a signal line connected to the valve and when you pull a lever it signals the compensater for more flow and it tells the pump the pumps swash plate tilts and it starts to pump.---- the detent latches the lever in the raise or lower position for no hands operation and when the cylinder reaches the end of travel pressure builds in the detent housing to overide the spring latch to return the lever to neutral. The 4 way valve gives you 4 notches in its travel the first notch either side gives you a pressure funcion the second notch you get a float which will let the cylinder float with no pressure on either side of cylinder piston. THATS A COMPLECATED QUESTION ALTHOUGH A GOOD ONE HOPE I HAVENT LOST YOU MIKE H
