Cub Cadet 126 clutch/tranny problem/question

HI All
I am hoping someone has some ideas for me on this one... My Cub Cadet 126 starts & runs fine, but has a strange problem. Initially, I was mowing and the tractor came to a halt- engine still running, mower blades still going full tilt, still in gear- I was puzzled and checked to make sure it was still in gear- as I left out the clutch it took off, only to stop again some 30 yards further. Push in clutch, leave out go again. (several times) Now it now longer will go, drive shaft is turning all the way back into the tranny, so I don't believe the clutch is slipping. At one point, I noticed I could grab the clutch plate and move the drive shaft back and forth (front to back) about 1/2". It doesn't still do that- I was able to get it back in the garage by pushing in the clutch nearly all the way. It may become more obvious as I get time to tear it down. We're in the process of remodeling/moving and have not had any time yet. Sorry to be long-winded. Thanks
