The pinholes in the block result from "cavitation". There is a decent explaination of it on the howstuffworks.com web site which I read years ago, but basically the powerful vibration from the engine causes the antifreeze (water molecules ?) to react with the block and starte eating pin holes through it. There is an anitfreeze additive the introduces sacrificial metal ions that get broken down instead of the block metal. They can be fixed fine by sleeving the cylinders, but I have not knowledge about how reliable such fixes are. Other than that, the 7.3L engines are great engines - I own a 2001 Powerstroke (same engine essentially with a turbo). Not so sure about the quality of the truck around the engine though. If they had put such an engine in a Toyota, I would have been all over it.
