Will anything dissolve varnish without removing gas tank?

I am having ongoing problems with flakes of varnish coming off the walls of the gas tank on my JD 50, and plugging up the fuel bowl assembly. I had the tank out once already and took it to a radiator shop who allegedly boiled it out. Maybe they just sprayed it black and charged $40. I don't want to have to take it out again, since it's a pain to remove (have to take apart the steering box and shaft to remove the hood), so if anyone knows of a chemical I can pour in the tank to dissolve the gum and varnish, please post. Acetone maybe? Lacquer thinner?
