Better idea, remove the gear box from the PTO generator. Install a suitable belt pulley and one on the car engine flywheel. Most likely the generator itself needs to turn at either 1800 or 3600 rpm to produce 60 Hz. It won't be any other speeds than these two. More likely 3600, which you can tell by checking the gear ratio when you take the gear box apart. The car engine will give you best efficiency probably down about 1500 to 1800 rpm if its big enough to run the generator load at that speed. Pick a big enough belt (or a couple belts) and pair of pulleys. A commercial belt and pulley shop can work out those details for you. Then you need to concoct some sort of engine governor to set the frequency close to 60 Hz. I did that with an electric motor about 23 years ago to make an isolated supply for the computer terminals in a big newspaper. The newspaper machinist saved the gears so when the generator was no longer needed, he could take it home to his PTO and tractor. Gerald J.
