JD No1 cylinder flywheel or mag side?

Heres a question that will have you guys laughing...I'm new to JDs and are timing an old 38 D the book says turn the flywheel until the No1 or left cylinder is on the compression stroke. Q: OK is the No1 cylinder (left) the one closest to the flywheel.....Seems who ever wrote the book expects me to know this....looking at the radiator flywheel is to the right sitting on the seat it's to the left...By all means give me crap but while you at it give me an answer too please.
