Rebuild kits

On most all major repair items I purchase I do some price checking. on a engine kit for my JD 401 industrial there is almost 300.00 difference between high, and low prices. All parts in the kits are said to be good quality. Is there a lot of mark up in this kind of stuff? I know by experience just because something comes a brand store, and is high priced, Doesn't mean much anymore. Like the water pump I purchased from NAPA and found out it was made Japan. Any thoughts. Stan
