You can just replace the old ring with the new composition pellathane ring - but it's usually eliminated and updated with the new sytle EID retainer. Just about all DB2 pumps came with the newer retainer assembly after mid-1985. The new style elastomer insert drive (EID) adds another $30 to the job. The seal kit itself is usually $20. In regard to the original style ring - like what failed - Stanadyne changed the material in it a couple of times in attempts to make it last longer - before giving up on it for automotive use. The ring you get now is supposed to last longer than the orignal "elasticast" rings. I'd guess 5-10 years. For me - I alsways put the EID in - it's well worth the $30.
