OT 4 wheel drive chevy revisited

Allen, Bob, Bradk and Traper, the gear popped off just like you guys said. Went back together just fine. But could a fellow just pop the axle and put it back in if he left the unit engaged while he did it? Wouild have this held the washer in place well enough to restab? Just wondering. Thanks again.
