A properly maintained diesel engine in a tractor should run from 4000+ to 6000+ hours prior to requiring an overhaul. Friction is the culprit and different tractors develop their horsepower at different rpm's. I like to look at what rpm the 540 pto speed is reached. Those tractors that develop the 540 pto at engine rpm of say 1500 seem to run to the high side prior to overhaul whereas, the tractors that operate the 540 pto at engine speed of say 2400 rpm tend to require overhaul at the low hour number. There is always the exception to everything. I am aware of a tractor with 16000 hours on it that has never had the head off. It is used to mow roadsides commercially and is seldom stressed and the environment is clean. It does consume oil at about a quart per 8 hrs.
