Good point about snakes. They love mice (besides the llamas, I have a few snakes). Copperheads are not the best snake to have around, but garter snakes would be perfect. A 2 footer would be big enough to eat mice, but probably only one a week or so. You will want more than one snake in the neighborhood if you really want to cut down on the mice. To encourage the presence of snakes, lay a sheet of plywood outside on the ground where the sun can hit it most of the day. The sun will warm the plywood, and the ground underneath. The heat will attract snakes. Of course, if the temperature drops below 65 or so, the snake activity will drop off. You will have to accept the fact that there will be snakes roaming around. Don't freak about it if you run across them. A snake is a very lazy animal, and will not try to eat something that is too big to eat. In other words, unless you wind up with a 12 foot boa under the sheet of plywood, you are not going to get eaten. They will strike if startled - natural reaction. Not a big deal from a two foot garter snake - hurts about the same about as a cat would hurt if it got a little to playful.
