I had a 94 gmc 1/2 ton with 4x4, it had the stick on the floor. To go from 2 high to 4 high I would just let the truck coast ( foot off gas to unload the drive train ) and pull the lever to 4 high and wait for the indicator to light up that it had got done shifting. To get into 4 low you had to stop and then shift to 4 low if I recall correctly.
