JUST WONDERIN AOBUT A HYDRO-STATIC TRANS

Posted by Ken McWilliams on August 25, 1999 at 10:06:40 from (205.188.193.168):

I have a CASE 420B loader/backhoe that has the CASE-O-MATIC clutch with a reverser. I'm not impressed with the clutch action because it is so jerky and the reverser synchronizers are worn't out. I'm seriously considering making a home-made hydraulic "reverser" unit using a pressure compensated pump mounted on the rear of the crankshaft and with a hydraulic motor on the input shaft of the transmission. It will have a foot operated directional valve with twin relief valves crossed on the lines going to the hydraulic motor to prevent over pressurization if the motor is driven by the tractor's inertia during stopping.

I see a lot of virtue in this system, mostly hands-off forward and backward movements while using the loader, also, when the tractor is stopped, the blocked valve circuitry will act as a parking brake. Another benefit of this type of hydraulic system is that the heat generation will be minimal. The CASE-O-MATIC torque tube is already an oil reservoir which will act as the reservoir for the new system.

Question: Are there any examples of hydro transmissions like this in commercial tractors?

Question: Does anyone have a used pressure compensated 15-20 GPM pump @ 2000 RPM with counter-clockwise rotation for sale?

Question: Will a pressure compensated pump from a John Deere tractor work in this case if it is run in the opposite direction on the rear of the engine rather on the front?

I'm sure there are many out there who are thinking "why go through all the trouble". I'm getting a winter project lined up. I also want to replace the lousy power steering and a pressure compenstated pump will allow me to use closed center valving for the power steering and the reverser simultaneously.

Today's Featured Article - History of the Nuffield Tractor - by Anthony West. The Nuffield tractor story started in early 1945. The British government still reeling from the effects of the war on the economy, approached the Nuffield organization to see if they would design and build an "ALL NEW" British built wheeled tractor, suitable for both British and world farming. ...
