The cutoff between 540 & 100 hp is something around 70 hp. To transfer more than that hp would have been difficult with the shaft size of the 540 pto, so manufacturers went to the 1000 rpms, which can transfer almost double the hp on the same shaft size. Small tractors offer 540, mid-sized offer both, and large tractors may only have 1000. As long as you have the right pto size for your implement, and your engine has enough hp to run the implement, it won't matter which tractor you use. --->Paul
