I'm not sure who set the standard for PTO speeds. I know that Allis Chalmers and IH were in early, but don't know who was first. The PTO speed is just that, the RPM's of the PTO shaft at rated speed. So...540 is 540 reguardless of what tractor it is on. A 4020 will give much better performance thatn a 60 just due to more power and a smoother motor. There is not much corroelation between engine and PTO speeds. On older tractors, when wide open was the rated speed, wide open gave the correct PTO speed. On newer engines, where rated speed can be a few hundred RPM's below wide open, the engine must be run at rated speed to get the correct PTO speed. That speed being indicated on the tractor's tachometer. Aaron
