The loud bang is caused by: When you shut off the ignition and the engine is coasting to a stop it is still pumping the fuel and air through it. A hot spot in the exhaust is what sets it off. The time delay is the "settle and mix" time. I had a twin cylinder briggs that did that. I put a solonoid in the intake that opened when the key was turned off and let enough air in the engine to make it to lean to burn. Worked. Darn thing always made me jump even when I expected the boom. The later model Onan gen-sets have a solonoid on the main jet to cut the fuel off on shutdown partly because of this problem.
