I think it was one those 'Real men don't have hay fever' things. Or as with many things of that time it just hadn't been invented. I remember seeing lot of folks having hay fever symptoms way back in the '40s but few acknowledged. My aunt and granddad had hay fever but dad only got 'all choked up' by the dust.
