If it is a spinning shaft.. and the scratch is across where the seal rides.. use a sleave. if it is a hy piston.. braze or silver solder it up, then polish down with a file then emeory cloth, then super fine sand paper.. perhaps then rubbing compound. This works for gouges too.. though I try to file gouges out to match contour of the shaft.. then fill em up. You will find that silver solder is easier to apply and remove than brass.. yet should hold up reasonable well to the seal / wipes. Soundguy
