From working on IH's I've found that one really big 12v battery is better then two 6v batteries. Yes they probably have more cca's but you also have twice as many points of failure. Corrosion was a big problem. I can't remember the exact size of the battery i used but it looked like two of those long 6v built together. maby 1125 cca's ? probably close to the cca's of the two 6v's or to what the 966 tractor required. For the 686 I used a New top end car battery that i think approached 900cca's. I know off the subject - but got twice the battery life and much better winter starting. my two cents
