The only way to know for sure were the tractor should go on the trailer is to load the tractor and take the rig to a scale. Weigh the front and rear axle on the truck and both axles on the trailer. Move the tractor back or forward until you have 10% of the trailer weight on the truck rear axle. If you do not know what your truck rear axle weighs without a load or you do not know what your trailer loaded weighs then get them weighed separately. Once you have the tractor in the correct location make a mark on the trailer so you can put back the next time. Look at your truck and trailer to see what it look like correctly loaded. This is the only way to know for sure you are doing it correctly. Anything else is just guess. People have been killed because they were not good at guessing. How good are you? What ever you do don't load it tongue light. Also check the load rating on the tires. Most of the trailers have more axle capacity then tire capacity. They put cheap tires on trailers unless you pay extra. Check the air pressure in your tires every time you load up. To get the max weight on the tires you have the correct PSI. Do not pull in overdrive unless you have a temp gauge on the trans. It does not matter if it "has the power to pull it in overdrive". The cooling is not the same.
