Two 3500 pound axles do not a 10,000 pound trailer make. They make only a 7000 pound trailer. You want the load to just about balance on the trailer with a bit of bias to make the tongue heavy by about 10% of the load. If the tongue is light the trailer won't follow, but will wander all over the road. Without a load equalizing hitch, you don't want a couple tons on the tongue either the truck will not have adequate weight on the front wheels for good steering. A hitch rated at 7500 pounds is not for 7500 pounds of tongue weight, but probably 750 pounds tongue weight and 7500 pounds total for trailer and load. If you don't have brakes on the trailer, life will get excessively exciting when you try to slow or stop 7500 pounds on the trailer with a 3000 pound truck. Been there, done that, survived only because the road was clear... Gerald J.
