In fact, I owned two 574, a good one with Y axle from 1971 and a very bad one from 1976, both purchased brand new. The 1976 was very difficult to start. The 1971 was better. I know a neibor who owns a 624 (206 CID from Germany) and this one is very easy to start. I installed a heater-circulator on the 574-1976. IH dealer made an hole in engine block between cylinder 2 and 3 but I am not sure. This improved winter starting. Previously, the heater-circulator was collected directly to water pump and it was not very efficient. I suggest high compression ratio engine like Deere 17.8 to 1(and Case-IH Cummins 17.8 to 1 or Deutz 19-20 to 1, too) for un-aided easy starting in winter, this means no heater, perhaps just a small amount of ether because electricity could be not available in the forest. Of course, best of all is gasoline engine ... like good old Farmall H. I apologize for knocking IH but everybody knows that Case IH is currently manufacturing far better tractors than IH 574. Roger
