O.T. '97 JEEP CHEROKEE ENGINE NOISE

Hey guys--been out of touch and unable to do much posting--still doing Ivan, Dennis & Katrina work between FL & MS and also trying to make a living and pay the bills too. Our 4 Liter, Cherokee engine is making a noise that sounds like a rod knocking. It's not a real loud knock and sometimes it can't be heard. A few facts about the engine: Mileage 130K, dealer serviced by previous owner and I've changed oil & filter at 3500-4000 mile intervals. Engine runs smooth as silk and oil pressure maxs out at 40 pounds on the gauge and will drop to 25 or so at idle. While running, I pulled one plug wire at a time and the noise remained for each wire pulled. (This sorta tells me that it's not a rod.) I've looked at all the pulleys and listened to each with stethyscope and the water pump bearing makes the most noise with power steering pump coming in second. I also listened to all 6 exhaust and intake ports with the stethyscope and none of the cylinders sound any noisier than the others. The noise is definitely on the engine and is not related to drive train as it happens while not rolling.

Last night I looked underneath the engine at the harmonic balancer and I did see where the balancer appears to be "kissing" or "skimming" the forward lip of the oil pan. No sparks are showing but it looks like the balancer and pan may be touching at regular points around the rotation.

So with all that said, does anyone have any words of wisdom as to what this could be?
