I've got the same machine - 1967 Pettibone "Multi-Hoe LDA with the 3-53 Detroit and Allison trans. I've had the same problem with it and also my little Ford 4000 hoe. It was the cylinder packings. You really notice it with the Pettibone since the boom cylinder is pretty d*mn big. I had to torch access holes in the boom to get the hoses off, to get the cylinder out. Fixing the boom cylinder on that thing is not a lot of fun.
