: : I have a 1959 Ford 871 Select-O-Speed that has not failed untill recently. The tractor run great when it was shut down, then 5 min. later when I started it back up, it would not move. I changed trans. fluid and filter and it still only will move if you run the motor wide open, then the tractor will move, but as soon as you idle the motor down, the tractor stops. ------- Any ideas? : : Thanks for any info. : Check the valves/valve body for dirt or metal chips. Growing up at home we had a Select-o-Speed and had alot of trouble with the valves plugging. We were told that when they manufactured the trans. housings they didn't do a very good jobof cleaning all of the sand out from casting. Ours had a bearing/shaft that went bad and kept plugging valves with chips. I don't know for sure if that's what's wrong with yours though. On ours when a valve didn't work right anymore you'd lose a set of gears, either 1 2 3 4; or 5 6; or 7;8. 9 and 10 always seemed to work though. : Dave Doug and Dave, I too have a 871 with a Select-O-Speed tranny. The engine is still strong but the transmission sometimes works in R1, 5,6,9. All other gear work consistently. Have tried adjusting the bands, changing oil, but no help. Oil appears white as if getting water mixed, but I believe it is air. Any ideas, Don
