In Michigan the requirements for a CDL are as follows. These are probably similar for other states, seeing as how the CDL is a nation wide license. I hope this clears up the confusion..Sorry if it sounds technical, but it's straight from the book.....

Single Vehicles: Having a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more.

Combination Vehicles: Towing a trailer or other vehicles with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds.

Vehicles: Having a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more towing trailers or other vehicles not more than 10,000 pounds GVWR.

Vehicles: Designed to carry 16 or more people (including the driver).

Vehicles: Carrring 15 or less people (including the driver) transporting children to or from school and home on a regular basis for compensation.

Vehicles: Carrying hazardous materials in ammounts requiring placarding.

Now, what type of CDL do you need ??

Group A: To operate vehicles which:
Tow trailers or other vehicles with a GVWR over 10,000 pounds.
Group A designation allows you to operate Group B and Group C vehicles.

Group B: To operate vehicles with:
A GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.
A Gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more towing trailers or other vehicles not more than 10,000 pounds GVWR.
Group B designation allows you to operate Group C vehicles.

Group C: To operate small vehicles(less than 26,001 pounds GVWR)which:
Are designed to carry 16 or more people (including the driver).
Carrry 15 or less people (including the driver) transporting children to or from school and home regularly for compensation.
Carry hazardous materials in amounts requiring placarding.
Small vehicles (including passenger vehicles and pickups) when carrying hazardous materials in ammounts that would require placarding of the vehicle.

Who can get a special seasonally restricted CDL ??

A special seasonally restricted CDL is available for agri-business employees operating group B and C vehicles on routes within 150 miles from the place of business. Buses and school buses cannot be operated with this restricted license. Although CDL knowledge and skills tests are not required, applicants must have a clean driving record for the prior two year period. This CDL must be applied for each calendar year. Within a one year peroid, applicants can choose to have the restricted CDL valid for 180 days from date of issue or valid for the seasonal peroids from April 2 through June 30 and September 2 through November 30. The restricted CDL does not permit transporting quantities of hazardous materials requiring placarding except:
Diesel motor fuel in quantities of 1,000 gallons or less.
Liquid fertilizers in quantities of 3,000 gallons or less.
Solid fertilizers that are not transported with any organic substance.

WHO IS EXEMPT ???

These people do not need a CDL:
Active duty military.

Firefighters.

Farmers.: Operating vehicles within a 150 mile radius of their farm.
Also an "F" endorsement is needed by farmers operating combination vehicles whose towing vehicle has a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more.

Individuals: Operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possesions or family for non-business use.
