David, the input you posted is right on the money regarding the tractors you have considered. The optimim tractor for your needs is a IH 140 but they are expensive. A compromise to the previous mentioned tractors and one that is very affordable would be an Allis Chalmers model B. These tractors are know for difficulty in the starter (weak engineering) not turning the engine fast enough for a decent reliable crank. A conversion to 12 volts corrects this nuisance. Otherwise the tractor is somewhat difficult to get on and off (so are the Cubs, A's, 140,etc.) All in all, this A C, model B, would meet all your requirements and give you many years of use. I paid $675 for a good one 5 years ago, switched it to 12 volts for approx. $75 and use it for my garden without any hassel. The horsepower is adequate and the transmission speeds are correct for cultivating veggies and flowers.
