Outside of a 150 mile radius, it does not make any difference if the unit has farm tags, or commercial. If the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle weight rating) is over 20,001 then a CDL is required. As stated previously in another post,
you will get answers across the world from some DOT people. The GVWR of the pickup will be on the
driver door post usually and the GVWR of the trailer will be listed on the metal tag along with
serial number. If the total of these two exceed
the CDL limit and you are outside of a 150 miles radius
of the address on the registration... it is CDL
time. Now, many states do not enforce, or even bother to check pickup trucks pulling trailers.
However, you have probably noticed more signs at
weigh stations stating ALL vehicles pulling trailers (R.V.'s exempt)must stop. Iowa is especially strict on this and the individual exceeding the GCVWR rating without a CDL and in excess of 150 mi. of the princi
ple address will receive a summons on the spot, and a provisional
notice to drive to the nearest truck stop or be
faced with the possibility of another summons. I personally had to argue with a CDL examiner who refused to administer a driving test to me in a 3/4 ton pickup and Hillsboro trailer... even when he saw the GCVWR of the units was over the limit. 2 weeks later he called and said to come on in because his supervisor said the vehicle qualified for a CDL. Authorities were a bit confused when the CDL first came in and more of these snafus are being ironed out as time passes.
