Smitty in response to your set-up advice, in dry conditions, when you apply the brakes, you should not know you're towing a trailer. This way you know that the trailer brakes are taking their part of the load. In wet conditions(and loaded), I usually set the trailer brakes a hair stronger. This way, you are less likely to jack -knife, the trailer pulls you straight. In fact I usually use the trailer brake controller like the spike in a tractor trailer. But you have to use a little common sense and keep your speed relative to the weather conditions. As far as little trailers not being the same as tractor trailers, well your right, there's about 100,000 lbs. difference. Other than that all the principals are the same. That's like saying a Cletrac F is not the same as a Cat D12. Of course they are not the same, but the same principals of operation apply. I think all trailers should have brakes, and all drivers should take a tractor trailer training course, and maybe we all would get along a little better on the roads.
