All you have to do is connect a jumper wire from the bat term on the regulator to the gen term on the regulator. When you remove the jumper it should spark. This sets the polarity of the voltage regulator. You may not even have a regulator. It may just be a cutout relay.

Any way. I just purchase a new regulator and that was in the destructions. The generator never has to be polarized but I do think you have to change some wiring inside to make it negative ground. At least that what the guy here in town told me when I asked him about that same question.
