The reason why Deere and other companies call for soap is for one reason. The sleeve sealing rings - (with Deere it's the red ring - not the black) - are designed to swell once petroleum comes in contact with them. So, they want you to use something that is slippery but inert so the o-ring doesn't start to swell before the sleeve is in place. Engine oil works fine if you're fast. But, if you screw up and take too long - the o-ring swells and you'll damage it. Best thing is - first make sure the block is cleaned well enough so the sleeve pushes or falls easily into place (before the o-rings are installed). Once you know the sleeve goes in easy, then install the o-rings and soap everything up (any non-petroleum base soap is fine). Then, you will now that the only opposition you feel when pushing in the sleeve is the o-rings themselves. This way, is something is not going right - you know it's an o-ring problem.
