Chris, this is a long shot but I have experienced similar problems when switching to 12 volts. Often the problem results from the higher spark coming from the conversion. Sometimes on tractors with carbon wires the spark will jump to the wiring harness tube or to the engine or sheet metal of the tractor. Additionally, I have had the spark to jump inside or outside the distributor cap from one post to another. If you have not changed the plug wires give consideration to installing a set of "wire conductor" wires and temporarily run them outside the metal wire holder. Look the distributor cap over thoroughly looking for black/dark carbon appearing marks between posts. How many ohms is the resistor? In my opinion I would want one not less than 1.65 ohms. Try running the engine in the dark and look for sparks jumping. I have run into a number of the distributor mounted coils that are made today for flathead V8s that are junk. If you cannot find the problem repost and I will tell you how to modify your old 6 volt coil to where you can use a universal GM car coil which is most reliable
