There are two bearings. The one at the brush end is a lot less sturdy than the one at the pulley end. A bearing too loose can let the armature drag on the field poles and gets a lot of heat in a hurry. Once you've let it get to smoking and smelly, its probably fried the winding insulation and needs a total rewind job to fix it. Better to replace it. The pulley is held on with a big nut and has a key in the shaft. May take a puller to get the old one off. Gerald
