Since you said in your post that the coil had a plastic case can I assume that this coil is mounted on the distributor. If this is correct, a different approach from all the other good responses that were posted is;remove the old coil and rip the guts out of the housing. run a jumper inside the old housing from the hot incoming primary ignition lead to the high tension post. These connections must be soldered. Now mount an external 12 coil('60s GM car/truck type) and a 1.4 to1.65 ohm ballast resistor at a convenient location.splice on to the disconnected primary wire and connect it to the res., now run from the res.to the positive lead on the newly installed coil. Run a spark plug wire (one with wire instead of carbon) from the high tension connection on the new coil to the old gutted coil primary lead connection. run a new wire from the secondary terminal on the new coil to the terminal on the old gutted coil where the capacitor is mounted.Caution, Do not connect this wire to the ground side of the capacitor. Using an ign. switch with a start position and/or a Ford car/truck solenoid with and ignition terminal will let you start on 12 and run on six volts if the tractor is hard to start. Otherwise this is not necessary. If you need instructions on the latter, repost. Good starting!
