This is a one cylinder overhead valve engine that the rocker stud came loose and backed out of the block until the cap on the end of the valve stem fell off. The engine would still run, but poorly. The stud was tighened back and the cap replaced on the valve stem. Being this was the intake valve and having no book the valve was set at .006 clearance. The engine would not run. The valve was reset to .012. The engine would now run but poorly and the muffler started turning red hot. Shut the engine down. Reset the valve to real sloppy but to the point where the valve stem cap would not fall off. Engine runs fine and the muffler ceased to be red hot. Yes, the valve clatters. Anyone else had such a problem or know what the proper setting should be?
