I'm not familiar with Leyland's, but I would expect that the pump drive gear is holding the pump in place, if you haven't removed it. At this point I'm not quite sure why you're removing the pump in the first place.
I would start by ensuring that there is a good flow of fuel going to the injection pump. There could be a bad transfer pump. The next step is to try bleeding the system. Provided there is flow to the pump, it should bleed fairly quickly. If it doesn't, then make certain that that fuel shutoff isn't stuck partially back, or otherwise in an off position. If that doesn't help, then remove the side plate of the pump that has "minimec" written on it, and move the throttle ahead and back. Observe the movement of the fuel rack in the pump. It should move. If it doesn't, then it's possibly stuck. Those would be the first things I would look for. Although it is possible that dirt could ingress into the fuel system, I would think the chances of it getting to the pump are slim, provided the fuel filter was kept in good condition. That, and the Minimec/Simms pumps were fairly durable. Removing the pump would be a last resort, after I was fairly certain that it was the source of the problem. HTH. Rod
