GL1 Oil

There has been a lot of discussion on this forum regarding GL1 Oil. Is this an:- 1. Engine oil ? such as, 30W 2. Gear oil ? such as, 90W 3. Hydraulic oil ? for 3pt linkage. How does this vary from any other oil, and what is its main applications. Any special reasons would be helpful. I rest my case, ( No, not that sort of Case).
