Good choice Lenny, I put over 11000 hours on my
1978 1630 before rebuilding the engine. It's
just a good reliable, economical tractor. Some
things to look for on a used JD Mannheim tracor;
1. take a flashlight, open up the hydraulic oil
filler hole behind the seat. Look in with the
light while the tractor is running. If you see
a mist of oil or here a loud hissing, the
rockshaft seals on the valves, or rockshaft
piston ring is shot. Not a hard repair, but
time consuming.
2. Let the tractor heat up, then check the steer-
ing wheel for creep. If the wheel turns on its
own, at any rpm, then you'll need a seal kit.
Also, if the steering column gets too hot to
touch, this will indicate a problem in the
hydraulic system.
3. check the pivot bushing in the front of the
tractor, as well as the steering linkage. Both
have grease nipples out of sight, that some-
times get neglected.
Just take a good look and post back with any
questions, I'm sure someone else will have some
comments on these tractors. Also you can't go
wrong with the Ford 3000. As long as you stay away
from Ford's Selecto-speed, there's not a whole
lot that goes wrong with these tractors. My
experience with these tractors has been that if
I need a part for any of my JD's, I've NEVER
waited longer than a day, with the Ford, the
the longest has been a week, still respectable,
just inconvenient during peak times. Hope this
helps.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
