Open center is easier to build, nearly all the readily available pumps are most suited for open center. I've been using a Long 1099 back hoe (had to replace a lot of pieces including the main 4 spool valve). Its been running on a MF-135 using the external loader system. When I had a PTO pump, probably 11 or 21 gpm, it took a great deal of finesse to keep the hoe under control. It has 3 and 3-1/2" bucket and boom cylinders and a 1-1/2" swing cylinder pair. After some ..... stole my PTO pump while the loader was sitting outside over winter, I mounted a 5 gpm pump on the front of the MF-135. For these cylinder sizes its sure not as fast, but I don't have to run the valves with sandpapered finger tips to keep from jerking the hoe apart. Next, I'll mount it on my JD 4020 and tap into its closed center system with a flow restrictor valve to keep the flow down to something reasonable. JD recommends setting their remote valves for about 5 gpm which makes a 3" cylinder stroke 8" in a couple seconds. Faster gets hard to control, tending to knock the ends of the cylinder off. I've already moved the MF loader to the 4020 and converted its valve from open to closed center. Works just fine. Gerald
