The 40 was not available with a live PTO shaft, but the 420 and 430 models were as an option. It requires the 5-speed transmission. There are two clutch discs mounted coaxially. The inner one runs the inner power shaft, which passes through the transmission to the PTO. The outer clutch runs the outer powershaft which operates the transmission. This was not a field installable option. The internals of the live PTO 5-speed were slightly different than the normal 5-speed. Also the cluch housing was different, meaning a different center frame was used. An alternate option was the direction reverser, also used with the 5-speed transmission. The D/R replaces the center frame and is an exclusive option with live PTO (ya can't have both).
