Wire taps and such have been used for decades to record conversations people thought were private in order to be used against them in criminal and civil trials. This is nothing new. As another person said, you seem to be mixing up free speech with privacy. As for the actual question regarding free speech, certainly that is being curtailed. The prosecution and termination of employees for what they say privately at work, particularly via e-mails and web board postings is steadily increasing. Political correctness in speech has become so entrenched that people don't even recognize it any longer. Our current president and his minions have been quite loud in their opposition to free speech following 9/11. But then, most people think free speech means the right to say whatever they want, whenever they want, without accountability or responsibility for their words. That was never the case.
