I might as well put my 2 cents worth in. By raising octane, or boosting it with lead, the combustion flame is more controled and cooler, thereby saving valves. An interesting byproduct of lead is the buildup of a cushioning effect on the seats that helps prevent seat brcoming recessed, and a better heat transfer from the valves to the block. This is why manufacturers changed the design of valves and seats with the onset of unleaded gas. I was told by a marine engine manufacturer to run relead or another brand to help prevent valve seat recession. As a test, I ran relead in one rototiller with a Techumsah motor, and none in a similar machine. Both had fresh valve jobs, and after 5 years of equal, hard use, the one without relead needs a valve job, and I don't know if the seats can be saved. An unprofessional test, to be sure, but I use it in every ond machine I have now.
