1) 200 Amp service. I have a dedicated meter for my shop building -- it costs me an extra $9 per month for a meter charge, but it is well worth it as I have very good power and if anything happens to the incoming wiring, it's the power company's problem. 2) Figure out how many power outlets you want and double it. 3) Figure out how many air drops you want and double it. 4) Build in skylights for daytime use. Do some research as for additional lighting -- there are a lot of lighting systems out there, some good and some bad for shop use. 5) Add toilet and shower. 6) I constructed a paint booth inside my shop. One of the best things I ever did. Don't have to worry about overspray and I have a "clean room" for engine assembly and such. 7) If you have any future plans for having machine shop equipment, reinforce the floor in that area. 8) Keep interior walls to a minimum -- they cut down the versatility of the space. 9) Install exhaust fans in each gable. 10) Add an exterior carport for really dirty work like power washing, etc. 11) Telephone.
