A lot of opinions, but no real answers. I can't help you with cleaning the interior of the cartridge, but the outter portion can be cleaned with alcohol. The key to refilling cartridges is to refill them before they run very low on ink. That way the remaining ink doesn't get thick, etc. I keep factory cartridges around for printing photo prints, and refills around for everything else. Tremendous savings to refill your own. As far as buying a cheap printer and tossing it, you usually get the quality you pay for. I've not seen actual Lexmark prints, but they have a terrible reputation for being problematic. Just my opinion of course.
